History

Spruce Grove Cattle Co. is family owned and operated by Bruce and Mona Holmquist with their children Jenna, Matthew and Paige. Located 7 mi. north of Kinistino on the banks of the Pahonan Creek. As for a bit of history: The Holmquists moved to the Kinistino area with the emigration of Olaf and Johanna Holmquist from northern Sweden in 1929. Grandpa came first and decided to send for Grandma and the 5 kids. Can you imagine 3 weeks on a ship with 5 small children and packing your own food for that long of a trip and only speaking Swedish. Grandma was quite a woman. The Nelson side of our family arrived in the Kinistino area from Sweden in 1905. Bruce’s father Ernest was the first in the Holmquist family born in Canada. In 1961 Ernest and Joan (Nelson) were married and moved south to the Pahonan Creek where Spruce Grove Cattle Co. is located today.
While involved with commercial cattle from the 30’s we have gained experience using Hereford, Shorthorn, and Charolais bulls. After seeing the positive results using Simmental bulls, Spruce Grove Simmentals was established in 1977 with registered Simmental cattle. In 1991 Red Angus were added and the name was changed to Spruce Grove Cattle Company. The cowherd now consists of 150 head of registered Simmental cows as well as 50-registered Red Angus. The land base consists of 2000 acres. With the 3rd generation firmly holding the reins you can be assured of our commitment to the beef industry and your satisfaction.

We are firm believers in agriculture and truly believe there is no more noble or important profession than feeding the world. Let us help you do that as efficiently as possible.
