Why a Sparrow bull?
We are a family-owned and operated farm who have been in the beef business since 1960 and of those 46 years, 40 of them have been in the Charolais business! Years of meticulously kept performance records, cow families and very strict culling have provided us with one of the most uniform, performance driven, maternally prime cowherds you'll find anywhere!

We are not ranchers, we are cattlemen.
When we look for herdsires, we like them good-foooted, wide-based, hair and rugged with a ton of guts. Our customers like the same. We investigate mothers, daughters and sisters of the herdsires that are walked at A.Sparrow Farms. Our cowherd in key to the consistent pen of bulls
we sell year after year. Udder quality, fleshing ability, fertility and longevity is very, very important to us. With our kids getting to the age where they can be found out and about the corrals, needless to say temperament is very important to us.  We don't want a bunch of cows that lack maternal instinct no more than we want moms running us to the fence. . . just cattle with cow sense. We don't 'gather' cattle to build numbers. In fact, 94.3% of our herd carries the Sparrow prefix and of those 85% have Sparrow breeding.

We have an intricate network of cow families that add consistency and predictability to each and every calf crop. We don't breed to bulls just from looking at picture in a magazine. With the exception of an  extremely limited number of heifers who need an outcross to AI to, if we don't own them, we don't breed to them!

We run a 200 herd commercial cow-calf operation. The cows are primarily Hereford X Simmie and Red Angus X Simmie based. We feed out all our own calves and we know what makes us money! The overwhelming majority of our 2004 calves left the feed lot at 12.5 to 13.4 months of age, with average yield of 61% with grades of 40% AAA, 58.7% AA, 1.3% A. We had no overweight carcasses. We know what the feeding cattle is about, we do it every day.

We feed a gentle TMR (total mixed ration) consisted of silage, chopped straw and oats/barley using a mix wagon.

Who cares how we feed? You should! Feeding a TMR guarantees that each and every mouthful that the animal takes is the same as the first mouthful, the mid-mouthful and the last mouthful. TMR rationed cattle are generally more protected from digestive upsets and imbalances leading to liver damage and ulcers with consequences of hard-doing bulls and often sudden death.

No ones knows our bulls like we do. When we place a bull in your yard, you must be 100% satisfied with him or we won't be. If you are not, we load him up and take him home . . . no questions asked! Our bulls are available for inspection at anytime before the sale. If you happen to be passing through, come have a look before sale day, we'll be happy to show you. We're happy to offer free board after the sale (bulls must be insured) and free delivery within Saskatchewan (at shared our cost outside Saskatchewan). We don't sell 200 'alright' bulls . . .we'll sell over 40 of the most consistent set of hairy, rugged bulls you'll come across anywhere.

Our bulls are for serious cattlemen! Be assured that when you come to buy a bull, you are getting first chance at all our bulls. No bulls are pre-sold. We don not sell bulls year-round! Most of our customers sell their calves at 1-=12 months of age. Why would you want a bull that needs eighteen months to two years to get good enough to sell? Our bulls are fast maturing, stout bulls that will produce stout, fast maturing calves! Just ask Steve Harty, Bar Crossroads Ranch, winner of the Champion Pen of Feeder Steers and Heifers at Agribition for the last five years in a row!

Unless you live in a bubble, accidents happen. For this reason, we are pleased to offer out customers subsidized insurance on their purchases. An insurance representative will be on hand sale day to help you with your purchase. If i you have a problem, question or concern, call us! We don't have call display and we don't screen our calls . . . we want to hea rfrom you. We'll do what we can to help.

Finally, buy registered bulls! Whether you choose to buy from us, another breeder or even another breed, be certain to ask for your transferred paper. You don't peel the labels off soup cans when you put your groceries away so why would you breed cows with a bull that comes without history, data or information. It's your right as a consumer and our responsibility as seedstock producers.
