Born in 1927, Alan Sparrow lived in the Minnesota District just south of
Vanscoy, Saskatchewan. Losing his father at an early age left him to farm
with his mother and six brothers. To keep money coming during the winter
months, Alan took up work with Crane Ltd., a plumbing and heating company. In 1956 he married school teacher, Nancy Weedon, from the Prince Albert
district.

In 1959 they moved to what is now the main farmyard for A.
Sparrow Farms Ltd. It started off as a dry, blowing, summer fallow field
with not a tree in sight. It was here that they raised their four sons,
Norman, Morley, Vernon and Cameron. They formed a farming partnership with
Alan's older brother Merle until 1974 when Alan and Nancy made the
decision to break away and start their own farm.

The Charolais breed has deep roots on the farm. Alan purchased his
first Charolais bull in 1962 to use on his own commercial herd comprised
primarily of Hereford influence. Liking what he was
raising, he took Charolais breeding one step further and was one of the
first to import Full French bulls direct from France in 1964.
From that point on, the Charolais business was part of Sparrow
Farms. The first
breeding stock sale was held in 1968 at the Saskatoon Auction Mart. These sales have
continued
every year since, however the location changed in 1984 to the farm where it
remains to this day.
A. Sparrow Farms Ltd. was officially formed with Alan and his three
sons Morley, Vernon and Cameron and their families in 1998. Norman the
oldest son is a commercial pilot.

and as
they say... the rest is history.
