Hello, my name is John Collins and together with wife Darla and our daughter Anne-Marie, we are JOC Salers. Our ranch is located 1 and 1/2 miles west of Kenaston, SK. Kenaston is found on the crossroads of Highways 15 and 11, 45 miles south of Saskatoon and 100 miles of north of Regina. Since we took the farm over from my Dad, we are developing a large custom grazing operation and a growing cut and wrap Salers beef business. Together with my Dad we have been using Salers for the past 20 years. The success of our commercial program in the first 10 years with calving ease, terrific calves and superb fertility from the bulls and our subsequent replacement heifers convinced us to start a purebred herd. In the last 10 years we have been striving towards a strictly purebred herd with a goal of reaching 150 head to calve.  There is no better mother out there than a Salers cow. Currently, we calve most of the cows in January and February but with a lot of consideration we are planning to push some of the cows back to May-June calving.

We show our cows at a variety of shows throughout the year. We usually exhibit in Prince Albert, SK in August and then in Edmonton, AB at Farmfair and in Regina, SK at Agribition. We make an effort to be where we can and have exhibited our cattle at other shows as well including Saskatoon Fall Fair and Olds Fair. We usually sell a few head at the fall consignment sales including the National Sale and the Canadian Collection Sale.

We have been proud of what we have accomplished in our last 10 years of breeding Salers cattle. We try to use a good combination of the best old genetics while striving to bring in new outcross bloodlines out of the U.S. In the spring of BSE we managed to squeak a bull past the border in time which now is our main herd sire - Matador. Matador in the last couple of years has been doing everything that you want a bull to do. He's a great breeder, homozygous polled, consistently low birth weights and calves that outperform anything we have ever had on the farm.
