Eighty Years of Raising Herefords. . .

It was all started by John Guilford, who bought his first Herefords (two heifer calves, Rosie 56500 and May Wallace 56502) from W. Caldron at Glenora in 1925. Later, John's son Frank, after receiving his Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba in 1937, came back to the farm and together they built the cow herd, maintaining a rigid culling program. In 1955, they were running approximately 40 dehorned females; it was at this time they decided that dehorning all these animals was  lot of work and purchased a polled son of Woodrow Mischief the 48th. The purchase of this bull marked the beginning of Double U Polled Herefords.

Over the years, there have been 5 generations of Guilford's involved in raising cattle under the Double U prefix. The current operation consists of Dave (Frank's eldest son), who came back to the farm in 1967 and Rod (Dave's son) and their families. Although the faces at Guilford Farms have changed over time, the focus has remained constant...maintain a strict culling program based on performance (ROP testing since 1963), fertility and longevity in order to supply producers with some of the most profitable mother cows in the industry. The focus has enabled us to consistently sell over 250 bred females annually with most of them going to repeat customers.

After 80 years of breeding Herefords cattle, there are a few things we've learned:
1. The bad ones eat as much as the good ones.
2. The cattle you produce need to work for you, not you for them.
3. Good cattle can be raised in poor environments and still make good cattle...poor cattle can be raised in good  environments and still be poor cattle.
4. If you believe in what you're selling, it's easy to stand behind it...so don't sell if you're going to stand behind it!

Looking back there are some cattled we raised that we remember well, but there are very few friendships we've made ni this industry that we've forgotten. Thanks to each and every one of you for your role, large or small, in helping us continue to do what we love...raising Hereford cattle.
