This year we will have 500 cows on range. Both of the purebred herd and commercial herds are run together
in the mountains. The range pastures open on the 1st of June and run through to the 16th of October. With 30km of highway fence and half a million acres of crown range land, we have our work cut out for us fencing and moving cows between alotted pasture boundaries.

The cows start grazing the lower valleys and mountain slopes, grazing higher as the spring like pastures mature later at higher altitudes and the bugs aren't as persistent yet. The pastures they are eating are mostly hard grasses, ie: bunch grass and wheat grass, with some wild alfalfa, shrubs and some riparian areas.

In late September we start bringing the cows down. This generally is a two month process, as they never all come down at the same time. Once most of the cows are down we will wean the calves. The best heifers are kept for replacements and the rest are sent to the auction market.
